  • maya, vray (RT) on a macpro with Ati or Quadro?

    Hi guys,

I'm looking at buying a macpro for mostly maya and vray and I'm wondering if anyone has experience with the following graphic cards:
obviously the quadro is much better because of its cuda's for vray RT (am I right?) but also more expensive so I'm wondering if this is it's money worth.
and should I focus on RT or just max out my CPU's and RAM since RT is only for setting up a scene?

    any comments or tips welcome!

    Dont buy mac.

Mac is 2/3x more expensive than building urself.

Second thing what work u do ? Heavy engineering work ?

ATI is 20x slower than Nvidia from what I remember in RT

hehe... well the reason it's gonna be a mac, because the whole team works on mac's
but yeah otherwise we would have build it ourselves..

so ultrasonic what kind of mac do you use for vray and maya?

I just have a macbook air and i only use it for testing stuff...our workstations are also custom built and run Fedora, but i think u can easily go with any new macpro...8 core should suffice but 12 will always be better...

Since distributed rendering works very well with vray it could be better if you buy the best valued mac (price per GHZ) and not the fastest and then just buy another one which u can use as a renderslave. maybe 2x8core macpro has a better overall value compared to a 12 core macpro

The good thing about macs is that u can easily scale your farm since all macpros are configured the same way.

There are also nvidia quadro boards available for macpro and i would highly recommend that cause ATI has not the best standing in the industry...maybe this has chaged lately, but even vrayRT-GPU does not work right due to driver issues...

          hope that helped...
