From what I can tell, a camera imagePlane is not used as a background when rendering matte surface objects. If there is no global override, the camera background color is used, but not the imagePlane.
I think I have found a way to work around this apparent limitation using a file texture and a projection which is set to "perspective" and linked to the camera and also connected to the camera background color. It seems to work, but I thought I'd post the idea here and see if anyone has a different solution.
