Very nice information thank you! I to had trouble finding what I needed to know when I began playing with hair and this is exactly the kind of resource we need! Could you maybe also post this in the v-ray fur thread in the tutorials section?

Your welcome Ethan, my pleasure, I actually came across your tut when I was testing zbrush fibermesh to hairsystem, was very helpful.

Feel free to repost the link to the tutorial where you like.

          Hi,

Thank you for posting the tutorial, it is great when people share their knowledge.
But could I point out one spelling error - the name of the material is not VRayFurMtl3, but VRayMtlHair3.
Currently you'll confuse your readers and search engines a bit.

Yeah i figured out the bend direction map painting technique myself - but that doesn't make it any easier to paint! We need someone (not me to code up a little plugin / script that takes artisan strokes (vector?) and converts them into the appropriate colour for the map. It's so trial-and-error at the moment. Then VRay fur would really be great.

Yep; in 3ds Max we just used its own painting API which worked pretty well; we have to figure out if there something like this in Maya that we can use.

                Best regards,
                Vlado
