    The thing about Soup is that you don't really need to be able to script. check out their example scenes and start playing. lots of utility FX nodes to push data around. that's the whole idea behind it... but there is a steep learning curve as its more a system with parts that you can hook up to do some really cool stuff.

    plus peter who made it is really responsive to questions on the forum.

      We did this spot with vrayscatter maya for the grass and flowers. We used 1.3.0 They have 1.9.9b2 now. appears to fix some of the issue we were having. we had to pre-proxy everything. we used quite a few hand placed proxies for the strictly art directed stuff (bushes here and there).

            Very nice thread! I really need to get my hands on soup...i already thought about scattering points in houdini and then bringing them back to maya, but with soup this should be possible without switching applications...thx for the pointer!

            cheers

              Dont forget the spPaint3d script which can paint instances, randomize scale and rotation from a selection of objects.

              Along with particle instancing it's a very effective process.

                @ oli

                u can use particle instancer, like i did need some mel-ing but u can get what ever u want, this is an old test i did long time ago

                1mil instances 45min (q6600)

                and some variations but less then the previous test

                  Great stuff.
                  If anyone is interested in this process just take a look at Alex Alvarez tuts over at Gnomon, Highly recommend these, some great tips and very comprehensive.

                    here is a test that i just did (vray scatter)

                    trees = 10k
                    grass = 30k
                    render = ~11min (1920x1080)

                      this looks good. How is the viewport performance? and is it easy to adjust their rotation/scale/etc after the fact.

                                Cool looking tests guys,

                                Can you scale/bloack things from defined edges? Say if you had a path through that forest as abvove, can one get the grass not to cover the path?
