    EDIT:

    Just heard from Joe,

I've got the right plugins running, but still, I'm not getting anything stable on non-planar surfaces.

    ORIG:

I'm going crazy here. I've tried everything I can think of, but I can't get shave to work with vray. There is something funky about my install.

I've literally spent 10+ hours trying to get this to install and work properly. Joe has been helping as well, but he can't reproduce the error.

    -vray 2.20.1 Win 7 x64

-Maya 2012 Subscription Adv Pack sp1

For my attempts to fix, in case you were curious:
No plugins, no scripts, no network install of vray, no network install of shave, default locations for all installs(clean), running as admin, clean maya.env, clean path, clean environment variables, changing dynamic memory, checking dates on vray_shave.dll and ShaveSh.dll files, running shaveDiag(), launching from a custom python shell to clean env, deleted EVERY other copy of .dll files from network and hdd, rebooting to ensure no leftover open file handles. What is strange is that it's the same for 2013

Yep. I've tried just about everything I can think of including installing locally instead of network location and disabling most other plugins. Are you on win7 or Linux?

    Here is my test scene.

The fur has basic styling. Nothing fancy with shading yet. And the size isn't tuned, etc, etc.

    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5398878/hair..._shave7.16.zip

Turn hairs from 500 to 10 or 15k.

I can recreate this with both of my installs with a simple sphere:
    x64 2.25ADV 2013 from Jan7 and 2.21EDU release.

I can render 100k's of hairs +GI in 30s with a plane with Hair3, but anything else crashes with more than a few hundred hairs. I've increased the memory, changed geo to static. Its true of both the vrayShave.dll shader and Hair3, which makes me think it's the ShaveSh.dll

(Network install, setting env variables via python, BUT I also did a local install to make sure that wasn't the issue)

    Thanks for taking a look.

    Well I spoke too soon.

Shave works great on a plane. 300k hairs, with transparency, color mapping -looks amazing and renders fast. Hair3 rocks.

Sphere, anything over 2k hairs, crash. Character, anything over 1.5k hairs, crash.

We've been sitting on a short for 9 months, waiting for a decent fur solution. Ugh. I was hoping to make some progress.

yeah there is some stability issues right now. I don't really know what it is, it also crashes if you have two mayas running both with shave in them, and if you try to render in one it will crash and then the second one will also crash.

    Yay! shave 7.16 and hair3!

What an awesome shader! So much more control.

And the translator works so we can render .vrscenes with shave hair standalone!

    AND it works with RT!

(I'm getting a repeatable crash if I render vray before building the shave hair. 1.build sphere, 2. render vray 3.add hair. 4 render vray -> crash)

thx vlado for ur time, but something is not working as it should, i tried to rebuild scene like u did but still couldnt make it work, i know im borring but something is not working as it should...

is there a way to add vray attr to shave, like u did with maya hair? coz this is a pain in the ***, if u know what i mean

i have to write down step by step coz i feel so stupid that i cant apply shader to a shave, so:

    1. after i make a hair to a ball,
    2. i open shaveDisplayGroup and select shavedisplay, i go to hypershade and apply hairmtl3 to selection

i hope these r the steps u need to do? let me know if im missing some steps here...

cheers and sorry for my stupidity
