Here are some samples for rendering Shave hair with the V-Ray hair shader (Maya 2012):
    http://www.spot3d.com/vray/scenes/shave_uvs_sample.zip

In the hairsampler.ma file, I just use the VRayHairSampler node to take the Shave color and transparency and plug them into the V-Ray hair material. This approach only allows three colors of the hair material to be controlled though (the VRayHairSampler node can only read the color, transparency and incandescence attributes of the hair).

The ramp_uvw.ma sample uses the Shave colors as UV coordinates to drive other textures. This approach allows you to map more properties of the hair material, and also to use V-Ray procedural textures.

Well, I got sad news guys. Just installed vray 22647 maya 2012 x64, shave 7.15, vray plugin 15, and still no texture. I can see something is changed there is something going on with hair color, but its not textured as I would expect

I can't get shave 7.15 working with latest nightlies Maya win x64 2013, joe said he was running vray 2.201. Which version are you running?

Sucks because the speed up is only recent builds, right? At least it's finally working for you. I'd be curious to know how to use hair3. Wasn't obvious to me.

Yeah its weird but good Joe is aware...For me, once I had this fixed and it was working, clearning out to a new scene and creating shave node from scratch crashed maya...(using vray of course) so who knows Something is going on as Vlado pointed out.

Actually I sent the crash steps to Joe, he says he can reproduce it, so hopefully it will get fixed.
