  • Light Select Render Element for baking

    Hello,

Is it possible to use the Light Select element when baking to textures? When I try all i get is a black image? I would like to be able to use this to pull a bake into PD player and be able to tweak all the parameters especially of the light info? I could also do in another program as well if possible?

Please let me know if this is possible or if there is another solution. I am trying to come up with a way to have more finite control over baked frame so I don't have to re bake, but have the ability to adjust light info.

The scene I'm working on has ridiculously long bake times mostly at 2k and 4k. Anything to speed up the workflow to help adjust once baked would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Hi,

What version of V-Ray/Maya are you using? Do you see the light select RE in the VFB itself right after baking?

I am using Vray 3.10.1.4 for Maya 2013.

No, I don't see the light select RE. When the bake is complete I don't see anything but the baked image in the Frame Buffer. If I send the baked frame to PD Player as well the layer that would be the Light Select is solid black.

      Thanks,

Is it possible that you haven't connected the lights in the scene to the lightSelect render element (via the relationship editor)?

Watch the place go mental when the word vray appears beside the number 3.

              I'm guessing you meant 2.10

When you create a LightSelect render element, it will appear as a 'set' to which you can add lights via the set editor (sorry I didn't specify which editor in particular). There the light select will appear as vrayRE_Light_Select (if you haven't changed the name) and that's it

                    Thanks for the info...

I am still having a bit of an issue I hope you clarify...

I have found the sets you are talking about and see where to use that... I am trying to see if when I use the light select and then send my scene to PD player if I can get all the lights separated? When I send the render to pd player, I end up with 1 layer in the timeline that is called light select.. I can manipulate some of the properties but this has a global effect, but I would like to be able to adjust the lights independently... Is this possible?

Or if all lights can't be separated, can I separate them by groups. (i.e. maybe have spot lights as a light select, then recessed lights as light select, etc) Ideally, this would help me achieve what I need for polishing and tweaking lights and interactions in the environment..

                    Thanks,

Well it depends on what and how many lights you put in the light select render element. In general, you can add more than one light to the light select. In the same time, you can add as many light select REs as you need. Thus, when you make a change to one light select, it will affect the light(s) rendered in it. So to separate all the lights, you'll have to make a separate light select RE for each, or if you want to group them - add all the lights that make a certain group to one single light select. The same would apply to texture baking.

I've attached a simple scene that you can look at. On the screenshot you can see the image linked to the pdplayer, where I have the light selects on the left and the RGB on the right. I've made changes to the lights and the RGB channel is unafeected. By the way, you have to set the light select layer on top to be blended using "add".
