  • Anyone using nightlies in production - since stable branch 2.1 isn't updated anymore

    Hi Guys,

i just wanted to start kind of a poll on whether someone is using one of the newer (unstable) nightlies in production, since the features are really awesome!!! It's really sad that the stable_2.1 branch isn't updated anymore.

Please post the build revision if you have found one nightly to be stable enough for production...and maybe an average number of crashes per day

    thx in advance
    Oli

I've been using nightlies on a couple of smaller projects now, and they work just fine. No crashes to speak of really. Depends on what you're doing and what features are being worked on of course

I've been using nightlies only for a good serveral months, allthough my "production" senarios is simple compared to other. I haven't run into anything major. One issue i do have though is related to distributed rendering and some rendernodes seems to not update their assets if i change it in the scene. so each bucket looks completely different. And sometimes only my main computer renders it's buckets and the rest is black. A reboot of the computer or at least maya/vray and vrayslave seems to solve the issue - it is a bit annoying though.

I seem to avoid the problem most times but not checking the option "used cached assets" but it still happens from time to time.

I think we fixed most of the issues in the latest builds.

I got a question about this ... is it possible to install a nightly build and plus have the latest version of Vray as well? so you can pick which one you could use?

Care to elaborate on those features?
Interesting thread. I'm usually against working with non-final software in projects, since it can really bite you in the ass. So it's interesting to see how many actually use it and what errors (if any) they encounter.

                    Hi,

It's possible to have both versions (official and nightly) installed on same workstation and Maya version.
In order to be able to select one of them for the current Maya session, you have to know that both V-Ray versions need to be installed on arbitrary locations .
You must configure your local machine to use the version of V-Ray that you wish to load in Maya. In order to do this, you should use V-Ray environment variables (described in our documentation). Also you may make a script that sets env. variables for each V-Ray version.

If you use Windows OS, you can check "install_vrayformaya_windows.pdf" page "10", where it is described how to set an installation from .Zip file with env. variables, which is included in the official build package.
The same information is available on our online help spot: http://www.spot3d.com/vray/help/maya...l_from_dir.htm

I usually on the latest Nightly and our farm is on a stable version from January. It works fine.
I usually have to go back to the stable version if I do distributed rendering. Other than that it works fine.

                        Hi guys,

thx for all your replies....seems we are having different problems on our site, since you are not complaining about stability...i suppose all of you guys are on windows, right? Anybody using newer features e.g. exr(deep) on linux without problems?

@vlado: can anybody of you help me debug our random crashes? i think i should email vraymaya@chaosgroup.com right?

                        regards

Well I just ran into a few problems running the latest nightly builds for OSX and WIN .... I was setting up Vray Proxies and also using the Vray Sun from my machine which is the only one in the whole studio which is running the nightly build .... and whenever I tried to send to the farm which is running 2.30 (stable version) ... I ran into problems ... the farm gave me a bunch or errors ... about some kind of attributes that I was missing "The VRaySunShape 'VRaySunShape1' has no '.fc' attribute." and stuff like that ... adn proxies didnt render .... so went back and re-install 2.30 and everything is working correctly ... so Im not 100% sure if I will recommend working on the nightly builds, unless you update everything ....

Just curious, is there any ETA for an official release of VRay 2.4 on Maya?
