in maya if you go to create menu, under vray, select create vray renderable curve >> apply single control node for the selection. You have to have your curves selected first. It will create the control node for that selection. Those nodes are basically mutual/exclusive sets, so you can add/subtract curves from it as you please.

I checked in both the current version (Maya 2013, vray 2.3) and in the latest stable version and I do not see that option in the vray create menu. What version are you using?
Also when I apply the vrayHairMtl3 to the curve I get a fatal error:

and it fails to render, crashing Maya on some machines
Is this a known bug? The vrayMtl seems to work fine...
