  • white hair without using GI

I have created white hair in various ways using a mix of various softwares/approaches
    (a) nhair + vrayHairMtl3 + GI + vray 2.25/3
    (b) shave + shave shader + noGI + vray 2.25/2.3
    (c) yeti + vrayHairMtl3 + GI +vray 2.25/2.3

What I need is to create white hair WITHOUT GI. Short of faking gi with an array of lights, or jacking up the diffuse component of the shader above 1.0, which is a delicate balance and forces my hand on how to construct shaders for the non-hair elements in the scene, does anyone have any good workflows for this? I cannot really avoid a general gray tone. Even the vray presets on the vrayHairMtl3 have always created are a cool gray and not a true white in the absence of GI.

I understand the premise of the shader and GI is kind of a must for white hair imo but I am operating under some render constraints and just curious if I have missed a previous thread on this or if anyone has any alternative workflows they would be willing to share.

    Hi,

It is difficult to be achieved without the possibility to affect only the V-ray Hair diffuse color with lights (especially for the ambient one). We have this already reported and our developers are working on it.
Here is a thread related to the same topic.

For option (b) this should work in my opinion.

You can always use a bit of an ambient light to brighten it up. You can link it to the hair object only. Other than that, there probably needs to be a lighting boost multiplier in the shader...

thank you for the response, Vlado. I think that would be helpful, but I think GI techniques in combination with your optimization of hair rendering in 3.0 maya may make this a moot point. It's just that some productions (or studios for that matter) have been nonGI for a bit of time and finding ways to accomplish with and without would be a helpful feature. Cheers.
