  • Vray Light Material - Illuminate without GI

Hey guys, i didn't have time to really test this proper so this question might be simple.

I have an object that is emitting light from all four corners. To simulate this, I initially used a Vray rectangle light with double sided turned on. This worked except for one issue, it left a visible shadow right at the line of the area light. This caused a shadow line all around the objects surrounding it. However, its supposed to be more like a multicolored light bulbs (in a way) surrounding the objects corners so it should not have this area that is missed.

To simulate the effect properly, I switched to vray light material, however, when I do it this way, the scene isn't illuminated. I have to activate GI which increases render time and honestly, I am worried it'll flicker.

Is there something I missed? Do I really need GI for Vray light material to work? Thank you!

You can create a mesh light (Create > V-Ray > Turn mesh into light). GI would still be useful to reduce the noise a bit.

    Best regards,

      Hello Vlado,

Thanks for the advise. When I did that, the colored ramp texture did not work. It is connected however, the light source renders pure white.

I intend to have an animated texture illuminate this light source so I will probably connect animated jps or tiffs after

If you want VRayLightMtl to illuminate the scene without the use of GI you need to enable its direct illumination option.

If the intensity of the light is higher than 1 it is normal to get burn-out textures. Would it be possible to send us an example of the effect that you are after.
