since both the preview mesh and the render mesh can be shown in the viewport and I don't know which one you refer to as "viewport mesh", I'll answer for both.
Render mesh: The proxy has an option tab called "Restore the mesh". From there you can get the render mesh the way it was in mudbox.
Preview mesh: No. (Long version: The idea of the preview mesh is "A low polygon representation(or placeholder) of the render mesh", so it being treated as a seperate mesh hasn't been considered.)
