  • Dome Light with sticky projection

    Hi all

is there a way to have the Dome Light HDR texture 'stick' to geometry?

So, when the camera moves around, the mesh appears to sit or 'stick' to the ground plane.

    General issue is posted here:

    Cheers

You have to somehow project it onto the geometry. I've been meaning to learn how to do this with hdrs, could never find a good tutorial!

      Thanks emartin8907.

The tricky think is to avoid stretching of the texture and avoiding seeing any curve in the geometry.

A couple of render engines have a specific node of shader for this type of thing.

      Cheers.

This is possible via Ground Projection option of V-Ray HDRI texture which only works when the map is assigned as a Background not as DomeLight texture:
        https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...oundProjection

Have you tested that option already?

          Hi Svetlozar

          Thanks for the info.

The World Coordinate System is set to Z (due to CAD date etc. coming in), and so the floor is at right angles.

I've tried changing the Up Vector and the Rotations in Parameters, without success.

Also, does the Background work on the GPU?

          Cheers

Doesn't look to work on GPU.

We're not getting any shadows at the mo.
Is it best to add a Wrapper for 'Ground on' settings?

            Cheers

Support for Ground Projection on the GPU is already added for the next official version of V-Ray for Maya, currently this is not yet supported.
Regarding the Z-coordinate, I don't think that Ground Projection takes that into account but where did you change the Up axis, from Maya or V-Ray preferences?

Can you attach a sample scene so we could better understand what you are after and what exactly do not work?

                Cool, good to know.

I can't upload a scene at the mo, but here's a screen grab and settings:

                ________________________________________

Maya Prefs - World Coordinate System Z

VRay tab/Misc - Up Vector - From Maya preference

                VRayLightDome/VRayPlaceEnvTex
                Horizontal rotation - -70
                Vertical rotation - 90

                Ground on
                ________________________________________

The Maya viewport looks correct, but the render is as attached:

I did some tests here and it looks like it works somehow.
Here how the projection looks like when the up axis is Y: Click image for larger version

What should be the correct way according to you, to keep the projection always to the ground like in the first image regardless of the Up axis or to rotate the image when the UP axis is changed?

It looks like the Up Vector option from V-Ray Render Settings is not taken into account so I logged a bug about it into the system.

                      Great, thanks for that.

I tested on a new scene with Maya's default Y up axis and came out with the same result as your tests too.

                      Cheers

                        Hi Svetlozar

Just coming back to this and the bug is still there.

                        Cheers

It's still on our list, but there's no progress at the moment, as currently there's things of higher priority.
You can refer to this tracking number for updates VMAYA-5963. I'll bump it up.

How do I go about using the tracking number?
