  • Really long wait pre-render while Vray is "Compiling Geometry"

I don't ever remember noticing this before, and this isn't a particularly heavy file geometry wise, so why is my scene file taking 1.5-2 minutes "compiling geometry" before beginning a render into the VFB?

Lots of DAG nodes would be my guess. Or per face shading assignments on a dense mesh.

Not the fault of Chaos Group either, Maya isn't as open to renderers as Max (correct me if I'm wrong Vlado!)

on a related note, any possibility to shorten the wait time so users can see the first pass of noisy pixels show up in VFB faster? I remember Vlado commented that each renderer translates scenes differnetly and some renderer would ignore certain stuff. Still I hope there is way or maybe making an option so users can see the scene start rendering faster.
      always curious...

@SonyBoy: What kind of objects do you have in your scene? Can you share the scene so we can look at it?

Unfortunately I can't share it, but the scene is only about 21MB in size, and 1.3 million polys (I was surprised it was this large, but still doesn't seem all that huge). There's little to no history in the scene, and also just a single node with simple animation on it. There is a small amount of per-face shader assignment (not my choice, but that's the way the texturing artist set it up).

Ok, then it would be helpful if you can attach the vray4maya_log.txt file - maybe it contains some pointers as to what is taking so long.

            Best regards,
            Vlado

Actually the problem seems to be only when camera is very close to geo. Is that normal?

can this be related to viewdependant subdivision, are you using any?
