  • VRayObjectProperties and Shading Groups?

    Hi,

Is it possible to use VRayObjectProperties trace sets on a shading group?

For example, I would like to exclude one particular object from reflection into one particular shading group. I am just not quite sure how to set this up.

    Any info would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Ben

VRayObjectProperties will only work with geometry objects... basically all types of geometry, but not shading nodes.

The object you need to *not* receive reflections from another object needs to have vrayObjectProperties assigned.
Then the object you wish to not reflect needs to be a member of the reflectionExcludeList.
Both vrayObjectProperties and the exclude lists are sets in Maya, so you can edit them with the relationship > sets editor.

      Hey,

That's odd, the online documentation specifically calls out shading groups?

My bad, it will work, but only when shading groups are added to the excludeList. It will not work if the vrayObjectProperties are assigned to a shading group instead of an object. That's what I meant to say.
What does your setup look like?

Gotcha. So I can add a Shading Group to the excludeList via the relationship editor, essentially using the Shading Groups as a selection set. This makes sense now. Thanks!

Yes. The only thing you can't do is add the vrayObjectProperties itself to a shading group, as it always needs a mesh as input.
Also - one drawback when working with non-mesh objects in those exclude lists - they might not show in the outliner as members to the excludeList set. But they will show up in the set editor. Just keep that in mind.
