  • Reflections coming up black.

    Hi All,

Having a bit of trouble here. I've got an instrument to render and my reflections are not working as expected. I tried Max Depth as well as un-checking and checking / altering most settings in the VRayMtl's attribute editor. The only thing that helps is un-checking "Visible in reflections" on the geometry level. My UV's are all laid out well, my maps come from Substance Painter, everything is set up as I'd always do it. When I try to make a simple VrayMtl with no maps, diffuse at black, reflection at white I get the same results. Has anyone seen this or know what it is I'm missing, it's been a few hours now and I can't get it corrected.

The image with the black hole in the center is "Visible in Reflections" checked ON. The image without that hole is "Visible in Reflections" checked OFF. I need this geo to be visible to itself and other parts of the scene.

    Thanks in advance.

This is a photo of the way I'm expecting the inner wart to render.

its hard to tell whats going on, can you post a scene where it can be replicated?

Sure thing, here is the scene with the main bell of the instrument and the HDR I'm using.

        Thank You!

Just increase your Reflection Max depth to 12, you can go higher but it will increase render time.( might be overkill)
Or paint a roughness map to dull the reflections on the inside, check a real trumpet inside it may be coated with a different finish partially seen in your photo reference.

Gooseneck, that seems to be it. I can see by your renders and the test I just did. I guess with a low Glossiness it just bounces itself to black. The Max Depth had no effect for me however I tried from 10 -100, it stays the same. The real change comes from the Glossiness map. Thanks Again!

Here's a look at the final results. The top image has what I'd call a better look. The bottom was the result I had.
