  • V-Ray not working with the latest version of USD

    Hi everyone!

We are experiencing quite a big issue here at work. We cannot use Maya 2025 with V-Ray 6.2 (latest update) when it comes to USD workflow, which is what we are migrating to from now on.

It seems like V-Ray is always a couple of versions behind, no matter what.

Do you have any solution for this?

    Thank you very much.

    Mauro

Hi, thanks for posting. V-Ray for Maya supports USD 0.28.0 in the stable builds. We are working on providing support for 0.29.0 but there are setbacks that are not entirely dependent on us.
Could you explain your workflow and issues in a bit more details so we could think of a workaround?

      Hi Vladimir,

      Thanks for the quick reply.

We are using the USD environment as a replacement for the native Maya referencing system. USD is light years faster and more solid. Also, materialX is something that we are also looking into, in order for us to be able to work in a more standard workflow (like working on files on multiple apps regardless of which one they were built in).

So, when I create a USD stage in the Bifrost graph editor, and then import a USD version of our asset, everything works until I try to render out, which gives me a blank render view and an error message stating that "V-Ray is not compatible with USD version 0.28.0.

For the time being we rolled back to USD v 0.27 in Maya 2025, and that seems to work fine.

I think that Maya 2025.2 has USD 0.29. Though, we'll verify that once we update our Maya version next week.

USD version 0.28 its working with Vray, I can't remember which version it does, try updating your Vray version.

        Here, using M 2025.2, USD .028, and BF 2.11, Vray 6.2

FYI: There's a page regarding USD version support (for the official builds) in the docs.

Maya 2025.2 comes with USD 0.29 though.

Did you replace that with 0.28?

V-Ray definitely doesn't work with USD 0.28 on Maya 2025.1. We tested it thoroughly and it gives us the incompatibility warning message in the script editor.

I have not tried downgrading the USD in Maya 2025.2 from 0.29 to 0.28 though. We'll give that a shot and see what happens.

In the meantime, thanks a lot for your help. Much appreciated.

Thank you very much for the tip, I was not aware of that page. Very handy indeed.

You do not have to downgrade Maya though you can just change USD path in your .env or however you are setting up your plugins.
And Vray with USD .28 100% works btw. You are seeing it above

I did not downgrade Maya, I downgraded the USD plugin from USD v 0.29 (that comes with Maya 2025.2) to USD v 0.28, and it works fine.

If I left Maya 2025.2 with its USD v 0.29, V-Ray would not have worked.
