  • V-Ray Displacement Artifacts

I am having some issues with the V-Ray Displacement on one of the meshes in my scene. This mesh is a label that has some thickness which intersects with another mesh (a bottle). The label mesh is a rectangular shape which has a VRay Blend material attached to it, with the base layer of this material being the label texture and colour, which also has an opacity map, used to cut out the rectangular mesh for the actual shape of the label. As shown in the image, the rectangular shape of the label is still somewhat visible with this opacity map being used.

I cannot even begin to list the amount of troubleshooting I have tried to fix this, but so far I've tried:

Disabling cast shadows on the label mesh
Checking the image texture for the opacity map has pure 100% black value in the areas of the mesh I want to be cut out
Enabling alpha is luminace on all roughness, alpha, opacity, etc maps
Enabling/disabling Wrap U & V in the texture map nodes for all textures related to the label mesh
Enabling/disabling/tweaking all of the values and different types of displacement within the displacement node (different displacement types, amount, edge length, subdivs, continuity, displacement bounds, etc)
Checking render settings for all of the possible attributes related to displacement

I am honestly at a loss as to what could be the issue but would appreciate any help on this.

    Thanks in advance!

Sounds like the mesh isn't clean. How does the mesh subdivide? What kind of displacement method are you using?

Currently this is how the mesh looks with a smooth applied, I've also tried the subdivide UVs option both enabled and disabled with both still having part of the mesh visible. I'm using the "Normal Displacement" option.

Hmm perhaps the issue is not with the displacement, can you post a part of your scene?

I'm not entirely sure what I'm looking at - where exactly are the artifacts in the attached image? On a side note, are you aware of VRayDecal - it's good for stuff like labels and has a displacement option of its own. Otherwise, attach/send the scene so we can look at it. Describe the results you would like to see.

I haven't looked at VRay decal before but I'm not sure if it will be best effective for what I am trying to achieve, as the Blend material works quite well for layering realistic materials in a print format for a label that has embellishments.

I have attached a copy of the scene in question regarding the artifacting issue with the opacity and displacment maps via the link you sent.

After some more troubleshooting earlier, I now believe the issue lies with the opacity mask and not the displacement, but I could be wrong. The issue as shown in the post, there is a slight haze underneath the label edge that should be cut out by the opacity mask, I have attached in this message also a picture of this artifacting after some levels adjustment to see it easier. Just above the red line is the issue, which is happening across the entire label.

Let me know if you need anything else from me to assist, I appreciate you looking into it!

I wrote to you in the ticket, requesting the scene's textures. I'm not sure if you saw it, so I'm also writing here.

Well, surely this is easily tested by disabling displacement for a minute? Always best to narrow it down as much as possible before asking for help here

That said, does your label geo have thickness/is a water tight surface? It kinda looks that way, so I'm wondering if your opacity map is properly mapped to take that into account.
