  • Maya 2011 - VRayEnvironmentFog

the 'fog density' flag appears to have no effect in the VRayEnvironmentFog node. I am rendering with VRay Physical Camera and VRay Sun/Sky

    [2010/Jun/9|11:19:29] V-Ray: V-Ray for Maya version 1.50.00 from May 17 2010, 09:04:06
    [2010/Jun/9|11:19:29] V-Ray: V-Ray core version is 1.90.03

also, leaving 'view dependent' checked under 'Settings>Default Displacement and Subdivision' freezes up Maya, or slows it to beyond a crawl when the 'subdivison' VRay Attribute is added to any polygonal surface being rendered, or 'render viewport subdivision' is checked. Unchecking 'view dependent' seems to let everything render normally.

Hm, I can't reproduce either of these two issues; fog density works fine, view-dependent displacement/subdivision as well. Keep in mind that you will have to increase the "Dynamic memory limit" parameter in the System rollout if you have lots of subdivision surfaces. However it might be better to smooth the meshes manually; render-time subdivision is always going to be somewhat slower. You can also try to adjust the maximum subdivision levels (the default 256 means up to 8 subdivision steps, which is more than what you will need in many cases).

In any case, if you have a scene that you can send to vraymaya@chaosgroup.com it will be helpful to track down the issues.

    Best regards,

I only act like I know everything, Rogers.

Thanks, the Subdivision was remedied by lowering the max subdivisions, and I emailed a scene file regarding the fog density with a plane and a few cubes at different depths. I've also noticed the environment fog doesn't seem to work well with shaders using 'opacity map'. Specifically single poly cards with tree images mapped to them. The environment fog doesn't display through the opacity map in the VRayMtl as expected. I will send an email with the image of the render.
