  • Displacement on file nodes only pushing outward

Tested with Linux & Mac builds 11922, no matter how I attempt to use a file node (32 bit zbrush or mudbox tiffs) for displacement, they always clip at the zero value and won't displace inward.

Inverting a map that's got nice peaks will hard clip at the "water line" as well.

In addition, VRay doesn't appear to be honoring the alpha offset in the file node when applied as displacement (which is usually set to -0.5 for 2d displacements). Offset of 0 or -0.5 render identically.

Applying a checker texture in the same fashion (with offset to -0.5) behaves as expected.

Screen cap attached, identical setups on the two planes, with left having a checker attached and right having a file texture. The blue plane is the midpoint.

In recent builds, there is an option in the "Misc" section called "Allow negative shader colors"; if you enable it, you should be able to get what you need.

      Vlado,

This is actually with that switch enabled (which is why the checker is deforming "downward"). It seems that file textures aren't respecting the setting.

Hm, works fine here in my tests. Can you get me the scene for this to vlado@chaosgroup.com ?

        Best regards,

          Certainly,

I'll send it when I get home this evening.
