Tested with Linux & Mac builds 11922, no matter how I attempt to use a file node (32 bit zbrush or mudbox tiffs) for displacement, they always clip at the zero value and won't displace inward.
Inverting a map that's got nice peaks will hard clip at the "water line" as well.
In addition, VRay doesn't appear to be honoring the alpha offset in the file node when applied as displacement (which is usually set to -0.5 for 2d displacements). Offset of 0 or -0.5 render identically.
Applying a checker texture in the same fashion (with offset to -0.5) behaves as expected.
