  • water bump/displacement

So I have to make a huge ocean with basic rolling waves and I am noticing that the maya ocean shaders/textures do not animate with vray bump/displacement. I see a vray water texture which I am using as a bump, but it doesn't seem to have alot of options like the other ocean shaders have. It just doesn't look very good and it is not giving me the types of waves that I am looking for. Any ideas?

    Try using "Vector Displacement".
    Also, check this thread: http://www.chaosgroup.com/forums/vbu...ight=VRayWAter

Oceans in vray for Maya is a mess atm!
Maya ocean shader doesnt work with vray which is a pity cause its one of the better sides of Maya.
The vray water w vector displacement is really limited and besides that theres really no produceral way of creating oceans whitin vray for maya.
Theres "HOT" which works nicely but again is very limited as you cant use any of the displacement/bump at rendertime (only as a viewport modifier).
Dl3d isnt supported for the Maya Vray version only max vray.

So unless you want to use the Mental delay or bake enormous displacement maps your better off at creating a teapot or something else.

Is there no chance of porting the HOT shader to vray? Its opensource, is controllable, looks good and just seems like a good option imho

        I'm looking at the HOT shader/deformer, but I can't install it in maya 2011 x64, nor in maya 2009 x64, nor maya 2011 x32

Oh , it sure sounds promising that you guys wanna have a look Chaos team rocks!

Regarding the installation , did you put the file "libfftw3f-3.dll" in the maya/bin folder ?

HOT support in vray would be great. Thnaks for looking into that!

              Okay, I've the deformer running

I'm not sure if we can have HOT support, because of the GPL license, but we will try to fix the texture, so it looks good and it is easy to use.

                Ok, I see.
But if you make that texture work I will send you a surprise!
I have an upcoming project with oceans...
                Whats your address ?

I think your package would go to:

                  Address:
                  Mladost-1A, block 548 ent. B
                  2nd floor, Sofia 1729, Bulgaria

                    Heh, good to know!
I have my package ready , just waiting for the texture

                      timdog:
Have you tried to lower the wind speed?
It seems that the default value is way higher then needed.
The default in HOT is 15, try it

Another thing if you make a plane which is 300x300 units big, you can set patch size to 300 and U/V repeat to 1 in the placement node.

                        Hi, nice tips!

Regarding the UV placement node I assume that your talking about vray water and not HOT.

Is it possible to extract the texture from the HOT deformer somehow?
Curious in how it works.. Is it generating a texture internally and displacing it in the viewport much like "displaceD"?

                          Yes, the placement of VRayWater.

No, it is a deformer and works on the geometry directly.

Yep Ive tried them and saw that the smaller wind speed parameter created smaller waves, more "ripple like".

Despite the HOT deformer in the viewport beeing heavy it seems to have alot of detail when subdividing and bumping up the res parameter.
Is it possible to create an optimized viewport displacement somehow? Any plugins or great ideas?
I thougt that it might be possible to úse the defomer on a "camera projected geomtry" that is only present where the camera aim?
