  • Rotate Dome Light HDRI On all Three Axis?

    Hey Guys,

I'm in a serious quandary. I need to rotate my IBL on ALL 3 axis. I can't edit the ibl for undisclosed reasons, however I NEED to be able to plug something into the VRayPlaceEnvTex node or use another node to control it like a Mental Ray IBL is controlled - with the regular rotational Axis. It has to be animated for a shot I'm on and that's the only way I can get this to work.

    Thanks for any help,

One way is to adjust the horizontal and vertical rotations as needed; I can get you the formula for transforming Maya rotation values to horizontal and vertical rotation. Another option is to use the Python post-translate callback to set the transformation matrix for the envrionment to whatever you need.

    Best regards,

Thank you for your input......unfortunately I know their english words but I have no idea what they mean. I'm lost at the Python call back to set the transformation matrix to what we need.

Is there some way other than using python to get that 3rd axis to move. My problem is that I have a car going around a corner with an animated ibl, as the car turns I need the pinching on the ibl to always be at the front and back of the car, however i can only rotate the ibl on the x and y axis, not on the z axis. And it needs to be a fluid rotation, which is why I can't use the flip buttons to align it up.

Thank you again for your time. It really means a lot to our studio and to me personally.

I would also like more control on the orientation of the IBL.
Even have it a finite light so it can be translated.

        Thanks.

          Hi,
Any chance this will be change in the future. No rotation around the vertical axis is a killer. I often need to be able to rotate the dome light to raise or lower the horizon of my HDR image but I can#t do it unlexx it is in the x or y axis.

          Thanks,

We will add an option to plug a custom transformation matrix to the VRayPlaceEnvTex node; you can then link it to whatever you want.

            Best regards,

Yes, it's been in the nightly builds for a while now. I haven't ported this to the stable branch yet.

                  Best regards,

                    Hi Vlado,
Let us know when it is ported to the stables.

                    Thanks,

Sure; this will happen faster if you can give it a test with the nightlies and let me know if it works ok for you

                      Best regards

                        Hi Vlado,
I tested the nightlies and it works perfectly. When would this be added in the Stable as we only use the Stables for production.

                        Thanks,

Ok then; it will go into the next nightly build tomorrow.

                          Best regards,

                            Hi Vlado,

I have been looking at the dome light with an Hdri plug to it.
When rotating the light the display update but the hdri doesnt follow the light. This is with half a dome, with the Dome spherical option on, if doesn't rotate at all.

On the attached example, you can see that rotating the light, rotate the display but the hdri is not rotating.
                            Is this a bug?
                            I am using this build:
                            [2012/May/25|11:43:52] V-Ray: V-Ray for Maya version 2.10.01, revision 20713 from Apr 22 2012, 01:47:29
                            [2012/May/25|11:43:52] V-Ray: V-Ray core version is 2.00.01

I would expect the hdri and the display to follow the light rotation.

                            Thanks,

                            Yannick

You need to check the "Use transform" option of the VRayPlaceEnvTex placement node for the texture connected to the dome light.

                              Best regards,
