  • Yeti, maya, vray no fur in render?

What is the trick to get the yeti hair/fur to render in v-ray?
I have assigned the v-ray hair 3 shader to the Yeti node, but no fur shows up in the render.
Does anybody who is using Yeti and vray have any renders to show of it working, I have yet to see any.

    Thanks

just to confirm that everything works fine

ill post some renders and how to get yeti work with vray

    cheers

Works fine for me too... are you sure the Yeti-to-V-Ray plugin is loaded correctly? Is the Yeti shader for V-Ray loaded too?

      Best regards,
      Vlado

OOPs, just re-started Maya and now it is working. I'd still like to see some renders though.

          Thanks

well i dont know, i need some time to check in real production

in the beginning shave was really slow (as hell) and as i can notice nothing has changed till now...

but if we have a furry character/object in the scene we use 3delight for render and vray for everything else

so far i was able to optimize vray/shave a lot in time numbers, lets say if the render was 3min i was able to optimize render up to ~45sec, and with yeti like i said im still in testing phase what can(t) do and after that will will play with shading and optimizing if thats possible

                cheers

So far I am finding Yeti far from easy to understand and set up. It is designed to be highly flexible but that comes at the expense of simplicity. Also the documentation is somewhat slim in detail on workflow, uses for nodes, why you would use them, no really useful examples or tutorials for furring a creature etc. It is reliably rendering in vray though using the vray hair shader 3. I suspect if you are a super TD type you will love it but coming at it from an average artists point of view it appears very convoluted and difficult to get your head around exactly what the workflow is. Shave I think is much simpler by comparison, the question, I am told, is how to get it to reliably render. I have noted that many people are using shave as a grooming tool to generate guide curves for Maya hair which you can then render with the vray shader. I have not as yet tried this myself but am probably going to have to look into it.

here is a simple/stupid test that u can do at home too

as u can see the scene is very simple, sphere, plane, direct light (shadow samp: 0, 16, and thats it

apply from shave presets, grass preset set the resolution to 720p and hit the render

                    no optimization

                    level 1 optimization

                    level 2 optimization

                    level 3 optimization

as u can see, the different is visible only on 3rd level

but as u can also see render time is 1:45 min

                    cheers

what exactly is your way of optimizing fur renderings in VRay?

btw. Yeti works fine even with VRay standalone, only some color variation on the fur is not working, but I hope this will come soon.

We have started using yeti in production and I don't think you need to be a TD to be able to use it. If you spend 1-2 weeks with it you'll know everything you need to know. Not many programs you can learn much quicker than that anyways. Maybe mudbox, but most tools in this industry is so complex that can it take weeks/months/years to master.
The level of control yeti offers is really great. The fur acts just as any poly object and you can switch shader in any render layer, change reflection, refraction, etc. You can even use the multimattes which is really great and saves you from setting up a lot of render layers for masks. Yeti also supports all the render elements that vray can output. And since it is node based you can make your own attributes and paint maps to have certain fur styles in different areas on the mesh. And they have a corrective grooming option, so you can change any problems you might have during animation: just comb and fix the fur in that area and then just animate the corrective groom on and off with a slider. We have only found a few small bugs but all in all a very stable fur solution. The best one I have ever used + the power of vray = good stuff

                        cheers J

                            bazuka,

Are you using shave directly or are you rendering with shave+maya hair + vray hair shader? We've had trouble with shave since it requires the mel callback, and that doesn't work well with our renderfarm which is set up to use .vrscene files only.

like i wrote in previous post, directly from maya add shave to sphere and hit render nothing special

well yea i know thats a probl with shave coz needs to make a callback mel, even yeti uses the same method for 3delight rendering with callback function...

i could take a look, maybe find out some workaround for mel callback, but im very busy these days (as always), so if u have any questions just shoot

                              cheers
