  • Displacement/Subdivision and RT

Noticing a bit of a hangup in the RT renderer if you're doing displacement or subdivision. It seems to need to calculate the result before every single RT update, which means you need to wait 15-30 seconds before RT begins tracing the frame.

Is there any way to get around this? It should be just calculating it once when you hit the IPR button, and not updating every time you change something, right?

It depends on what you are changing; if you are working on materials or point lights, the geometry will be reused. If you change area/dome lights, then the rayserver will be rebuilt - something that we need to work on.

Yeah that's pretty much what I've been seeing as well. Changing materials is instant, but moving the camera and lights requires a full rebuild.

Right now I'm just using VRay Displacement to achieve subdivision, so it's not too bad to simply turn off the displacement in RT and apply a PolySmooth...but if I was working on something with real texture based displacement, it'd be a problem.

Hm, the camera should be ok - I don't think it rebulids the rayserver. Are you sure this is what you are seeing?

Ah sorry, you're right about the camera thing. I was working through a locked camera when I experienced this so it wasn't moving around.
