There was a problem during my testing of shave, which required the hair3 material to be connected to the initial shading group, otherwise it wouldn't work.

Are you using a nightly build for this, or a stable one?

Try to render first with Maya software, then with V-Ray. If it works please report this to Joe, this is something introduced in 6.0.71 or 6.0.70.

Keep in mind that all versions <=.71 doesn't have the changes related to the VRayMtlHair3.

I cant even render with v70, exception right away with vray, works with software, but who needs that!

I looked at the release notes, and it doesn't look like it's there yet.

I'm using shave 7.0v09 with maya 2013 and vray 2.30.01, its working well. I usually assign vraymtlhair3 to the shavedisplay node directly.

I also just installed 7.0v10, everything seems to render the same as v09 ie vrayhmtlhair3 can be assigned to shave hair, and it will render fine, but plugging in ramps etc to control transparency, hair color, has no effect.

This probably means that our changes for support of VRayMtlHair3 are not included in that build. The material might render, but it's probably not correct. The changes that we sent to Joe included support for the VRayHairSamplerInfoTex texture and so on.

                        Best regards,

On the Shave website the latest version available for download is 6.0v71.

Where are people getting v7 from?
Does this mysterious v7 of shave now support color maps for the vrayHairMtl3?

It appears that hair material 3 is finally working in shave v70v12, but it still does not support mapping of textures.

The VrayHairMtl3 has been working with Shave since Shave v6. What was not working (and apparently is still is not) was the ability to use UV maps. That's a pretty serious limitation.

Are there any other hair plugins for Maya that can groom like Shave? Unfortunately Yeti is not available in the U.S.

If not, does anyone know of good workarounds (like converting the Shave to curves, and using it to drive another fur/hair generating program?

Vlado, can you outline how the VRayHairSamplerInfoTex should be implemented here? Where would it plug in?
