  • Vray 2.3 in Maya 2013 on Mac osx - RT not working...

    Hey all,

I had hoped my first post would be something more positive but I've hit a major snag with RT.
I've done a couple of searches to see if anyone else has had this problem but I haven't found any usable results.

I recent upgraded from vray 1.5 to vray 2.3 so I could use vray in maya 2013 and also use the RT function.
I have no problem setting of a normal render but I just can't get RT to work.

The instructions I have found to use vrayRT are as follows: Render an IPR frame... then it should work!

But everytime I try (with different scenes and also very simple scenes) nothing happens except I get a 'scene is empty' warning in maya and in the maya renderview it asks me to 'select a region to begin tuning for vray'. Nothing else happens except a unix shell pops up telling me lots info including 'error: Failed to start network server: Failed to open listening port (4'. Which seems to indicate I need to set up distribution rendering which doesn't match the docs...

Could I be doing some thing wrong? Anyone see any obvious issues? Anyone seen this before?
    I've included the logs/outputs below.

    Thanks in advance!

These are the logs/outputs I get:
(I haven't included the console window log/output because it's too long, but can include it if needed)

The "Failed to start network server: Failed to open listening port (4" error means that there is another instance of the V-Ray render server already running on the machine (perhaps registered as a service) and which messes things up. Is that true?

    Best regards,
    Vlado
I only act like I know everything, Rogers.

Doesn't the V-Ray render server have to be running for V-Ray to work in maya?

        Hi,

V-RayRT always uses DR. And when you don't have it setup in the setting, we try to start a rendering server ourselves.
And it seems that on your machine it cannot open the port for listening. Probably this is some network setup problem.
        The port number is 20207.
You'll have to check if the port is used by some other application or the firewall is blocking it somehow.

        /Teodor

edit: I have not seen that Vlado has answered you already...

I checked and no that port is not used by another application and the firewall is not blocking it. I even logged the local ip of my machine as a render slave and in the logs it shows that port is being used but I got the same issues and RT still won't work. Here is a snippet of the logs:

What is the output of the render slave?

Can you try to render with DR in Production? Here are the steps:
            1. Start the server manually
            2. Create a scene, relatively heavy (add domelight for example)
            3. Set the number of threads to use to 1, in Settings -> Other -> Max render threads.
            4. Add localhost to your host list
            5. Enable DR
            6. Render

If this works, RT will work, too.

              Hi Teodor,

Thanks for your help with this.

I followed your steps and yes a DR render works without a problem. But RT still doesn't seem to work.

Here are the steps I take to render with RT

              Render and IPR image
It prompts me to select a region to begin tuning for vray so I draw a selection rectangle in the maya render view

The result - nothing in the maya render view, nothing in the vray frame buffer, this feedback in the maya script editor:
              setAttr "vraySettings.sys_max_threads" 8;
              setAttr "vraySettings.sys_distributed_rendering_on" 1;
// Warning: [SettingsPNG] No image writer specified. //
// Warning: [SettingsEXR] No image writer specified. //
// Warning: [SettingsTGA] No image writer specified. //
// Warning: [SettingsTIFF] No image writer specified. //
// Warning: [SettingsSGI] No image writer specified. //
// Warning: [SettingsJPEG] No image writer specified. //
// Warning: Scene is empty. //

I tried to tackle this problem from a different angle.

This time I setup two other machines as render slaves. I got those machines to work and got RT to work once they were up and running. I still wanted to have RT working on just the main machine so I dug further.

During the process of getting the other machines setup as slaves, I tried to start the slave service twice on one of the machines by mistake and got the same error "error: Failed to start network server: Failed to open listening port (4".

This made me look at my machine again and I noticed that I had vrlservice and vray.exe running (for some reason I hadn't seen this before). I killed the vray.exe and that solved the problem!

                Thanks for your help.
