          a higher texel density for the ptex map...
          set the displacement bound to explicit and set the min max values by hand...

            you should take a second look at your ptex code....
            no surprise but renderman is much faster in loading the file and you get the exact same shapes you had in mudbox...
            im still not able to get rid of small artefacts in vray...

              Like you said, no surprise there... Ptex was written for RenderMan, after all - it would be extremely surprising if it didn't work well.

              In general though, displacement in RIS seems to have other issues - I couldn't get it to produce smooth normals and there were gaps between different tessellation levels; this was with regular textures though.
