  • Transparency/IOR Weirdness

Hi, I'm not sure whether the physicality of vray is just out of my minds reach right now or something is broken in the nightlies. I'm trying to create an Aqueous fluid around an eyeball geometry layer. I think I remember in the first versions of Vray 2.0 being able to just turn up the refraction color to white and that would make a surface transparent. Unfortunately I can't see anything that is directly behind the refracted geometry. I'm using an IOR of 1.37 and the refracted surface does have a slight thickness (extruded polys). If I move the opacity slider ever so slightly, the surface completely disappears, which I find odd too. I guess I'm just reall confused about what I'm seeing and why I can't see the opaque geometry that is behind the refracted aqueous.

Can I get some hints on what might be wrong. This is just plain odd, as I've never had this issue with other renderers.

    EyeBall_v001.zip

Here's a layered eyeball mesh with a standard vray material. When the refraction color is set to white the mesh behind it becomes invisible. I have no idea why that would be. Reversing the normals in every which way hasn't helped the situation at all.

okay, It's clearly the geometry that is broken. Can someone give me an idea on how to fix it? It's not rendering correctly with refraction no matter what I do. I know I sound like a total newbie but I think this one is beyond typical trouble shooting.

        Hi,

        Could you check this scene:
        Scene-test.zip

The original object has inverted poly normals and part of open surface attached.
However, i have rebuild this geometry (the left one) and have assigned new shading group to it (probably the existing one need to be recreated as well).
Also all parameters in Render Stats are turned ON.

        Hope this helps you.

hmm, I still can't see through the refracted surface and see the solid eyeball geometry. Thanks for taking a look though. I just brought in an earlier version of my eyes and that does render as expected. This other file must be corrupted some how.
