Thanks, Svetlozar. That's an interesting workaround. Do you know what's the reason behind this bug/issue and why setting light subdivision to 1 will solve it?
    always curious...

I am not a developer and I have no idea why that happens, it is a piece of code which doesn't operate well in this situation which needs to be updated.
The good thing is that it has acceptable workaround until the fix comes out.

There might be a solution my dear colleague Martin (3v1L) came across:

            - plug a useBackground in a vrayMaterialWrapper.
            - in the MaterialWrapper make your settings e.g. matte surface, alpha contribiution -1.0, shadows, affect shadows, etc...

you get proper shadow catching without lowering your light samples.

            Cheers!

That setup doesn't resolve the issue here, or maybe I am doing something wrong.
Can you attach a sample scene?

                  Hey Svetlozar ,

you are right, I have to admit that it isn't working in my scene either.
But I've attached a scene for you, to cross-check:

                  shadow__testScene.zip

                  1. If you open and render on the "walkaround" render layer the setup should work fine (with the wrapper and the use background shader)
                  2. then change to the master layer, with all the other lights and then the setup breaks (you will see strange shadows)...

It seems, that if you add lights afterwards, it doesn't work anymore, for both the object property workflow and my suggestion.
                  Sad but true

                  Cheers
                  Dominik

The walkaround_RL layer doesn't contain all the lights from the Master Layer that's why it renders fine.
If you copy the missing lights the issue will immediately pop up even with Wrapper with Use Background Shader.

Yes, that's what I noticed too.

If you add a new light, it seems to work, but it sometimes accidently breaks for ever...

With the layers I wanted to show you the behavior

The issue is random, the number of the lights, their settings and position in the scene are important factors for the bug.
The only reliable workaround we've found so far is the light subdivisions.

                          Please fix this!

We have been waiting 1.5 years for this to be resolved now. Every project it causes us to jump through hoops

                          Cheers,

Yes, we figured out what's causing it and we'll fix it.

                            Best regards,
                            Vlado

                              Thank Vlado!

Great to hear you have figured out the cause. We do a lot of integration work and it's a huge pain!

is this fixed? If yes, in which version?

                                Thanks
