  • 100% CPU utilization with Maya + Vray + Linux - 36core (72 threads)

    Hi,

I have one question which I can't find answered in any forum:

-> Does Maya/Vray/Linux utilize complete CPU if you have something like 72 Threads CPUs (e.g 2x xeon 2699v3)?

Does it have the same issue as windows? I am planning to get the 2699v3 (32core machine) and worry it might not use all cpu power in single render sessions.
I have read at many different places already about the problem with windows and the 64 threads utilization limit. Vlad was posting at many places about it as well and he mentions a workaround with DR slave sessions to utilize the cores above the 64 threads. But I couldn't find if Linux is the solution for Maya+Vray.

    thanks
    Peter

As far as we know there is no such limitation on Linux.
You should be able to run single vray instance on all cores.
But keep in mind that the rendering performance might be lower than if you run two separate instances of V-Ray and each instance runs on a separate numa node (processor socket).

Also running two instances on a single machine requires just one render node license.

thank you t.petrov for your answer. Thats great news.

        One question for windows users:
If I was to stay with windows, How can you assign specific threads to an DR slave instance? Or if not threads how can you assign maybe a processor to one slave and another proc to the other? Any instruction please?

You mention the render performance is better with split DR slave instances under Linux as well... Do you have also an instruction there as well? I am sure many users will benefit - not only the 64+ threads ones from splitting it up.

        thanks a lot
        Peter

oh. Don't worry. I forgot google is my friend.

I see that for windows you can create easy shortcut to start the slave always with certain cores, like in this article.

Will test it out once I get the CPU's

          thanks

It talks about V-Ray for 3dsMax, but it is the same for V-Ray for Maya.
