  • 2D fractal noise problems

    Hi there,

I'm using Vray 3.1 for Maya and Maya Ext 1 + SP5. I'm trying to use the standard 2D fractal noise node and finding that when I use it with Vray the colors seem to be significantly different than in the Maya software render. The issue is that I can't seem to get the subtle gradations I need when I pull the bias down below 0. Everything seems to go to black or white. This happens whether I use a lambert or a vray material.

I'm attaching a couple of screens where I use a simple lambert with a fractal node feeding the color. One is rendered with Maya software (showing what I'd expect) and one rendered with Vray (showing the problem). The shader settings don't change between renders.

I searched for something on the forum referencing this but didn't see anything. I also tried the latest nightly. No dice. Can anyone tell me if I'm doing something boneheaded?

    Thanks,

    Ted

Replying to my own question. So in researching this I did find the Create > V-Ray > Create from Vray plugin> Texture >BerconNoiseTex and other noises. This seems fantastic because I'd really like more procedural noise options in Maya. But I can't seem to get the noise to show up on my Vray materials even after switching compatibility (under plugin attributes) to Maya.

There's also no documentation on these nodes in the Vray for Maya 3.1 docs. Does this means they're no longer supported?

If they ARE still supported is there any guidance you can provide on how to make the noise show up on materials?

    Thanks!

Continuing the conversation with myself. This thread has the answer I asked directly above:

Super helpful! The Vray noise textures are far superior to what's standard in Maya. At least for me I can get a lot more variety.

In a perfect world I've be able to see them in Maya's material viewer as well (maybe in a future build?) But that's minor - seeing them on a plane in Vray RT is just about the same.

I'm still curious about the original issue with the Maya noise - it should be pretty close to what you get in Maya... will have to look into it.

        Best regards,

The fractal texture is not using the Maya native noise yet. There are some small differences that we must fiddle with before replacing our original implementaion.

Bump... Looks like this is still the case two years later. Just made a fractal noise based shader that looked great in the viewport. V-Ray render isn't even close. Are there still plans to use Maya's native noise?

What V-Ray version are you using? I know we made some changes not so long ago, but I'm not sure if they affected the fractal noise or not.
