  • Maya keep crashing when using IPR

    Hi,

I have been battling this IPR stability issue since Vray 3.0....

Environment: Win 7, Maya 2014 SP4, Vray 3.40.03 build Jul 20 2016. GPU: Titan X (latest NVidia driver). RAM 128GB
Scene: fairly simple, 1 mil polygon. 1 referenced scene. 3 to 4 lights. Some matte objects. 1 image plane.
Rock solid when I light the scene by doing progressive render (with geometry and texture cache enabled) > editing the scene > progressive render > editing >......

Whenever I start using IPR (CPU mode), Maya keeps crashing when:

    a) I "Toggle Target" of a light
    b) stop IPR and save a scene
    c) do an IPR after I just did a progressive render
    d) etc....

Basically as soon as I start and stop IPR and mix it up with regular progressive render, it becomes very unstable and delicate where Maya would crash at some point within 10 minute-ish sooner or later. It's hard to pin-point and repeat exactly what's causing the crash as in the past 2 days I have more than 10 crashes from doing typical scene edits.

I can say I have not had a 30 minute lighting session if I start using IPR. Again, if I don't use IPR, everything is stable.

Wondering what could be making it so unstable, is it Maya, video card, or Vray? And why particular it has to do when using IPR. For the past almost 2 years (latest Vray 2.x to now 3.4), I hardly have a lighting session with IPR (or at the time Vray RT CPU) that survive couple hours without a crash.

    Thanks.

    Hi,

I think the first thing we should do is to test your scene here and try to replicate the IPR crash. So please archive and send it to support@chaosgroup.com

Could you send us a crash dump and the exact version that you used when the crash happened?

Thanks guys. I am not sure if I can clear up to get the permission for sending the scene, but I do saved .dmp file and vray4maya_log.txt. I will send those and refer to this thread.

Great. Please keep me posted if you find the cause. I hope it's not Vray and is Maya or system related.

Unfortunately noting useful in the log so far.

Would it be possible to provide more details like:
What engine is that - CPU or GPU?
Do you use DR when this issue occurs?
Do you use our VFB or the Maya render view ?
The log contains actions like IPR Pause, have you noticed any relation between this functionality and the IPR crash ?

                1. It's IPR CPU.
                2. No DR at all.
                3. Vray VFB is used always.
                4. I don't see an IPR Pause button for this build. Believe it's the official 3.4 build for Maya 2014.

Does the dmp file help anything? I am not sure if I can get the clearance to upload the scene. This IPR crash has been an ongoing issue for a year and half. If IPR has been fairly stable on your or most people end, I suspect it's my system or graphics card issue.

Most of the time, the scene is too heavy for me to test on my personal box at home. But this time it's a fairly simple scene, I can try to see if the IPR is still very unstable on another PC rig.

Alright. Maya just crashed again. I stopped the IPR > Click on a group in Relationship Editor > Maya froze with my mouse blue circling > Maya crashed.
Glad I saved the scene right after i am happy with the lighting while IPR is still rendering. A lot of times, the crash after IPR is stopped??? Memory release issue or?

I don't know actually what can be the reason for these crashes. Unfortunately the logs and dump files are not very useful and a test scene would be extremely helpful in this situation.

Does the crash happens quite often? We could schedule a remote meeting and debug the scene directly into your environment if the issue is consistent of course.

Thanks for the offering. Let me replace the tessellated CAD data with some simple geo and see if I can re-produce the crash. If that re-produce the crash, I can wrap and upload the archived scene for you to debug.

I have made a simplified scene and almost able to re-produce the IPR crash. Stay tuned...

I recorded a crash video and uploaded it to Youtube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xD0wrASeOTw
I have archived the scene and will reply to the support email with it as attachment.

Thanks a lot for recording the video for this issue. Following your steps I managed to replicate the crash here.
Now going to run a few more tests to see what is going on.
