  • Machine freeze during rendering - Maya 2018

Ever since moving to Maya 2018, rendering with Vray will frequently lock up so that render progress appears to halt, mouse cursor is unresponsive and my machine is basically frozen. After anywhere from 10 seconds to several minutes it will release, I get control back and the render suddenly jumps way ahead in progress. In other words, the render is still going in the background, it just locks the machine up completely while doing so. It will do this several times during every render.

This happens on both my home and work rigs, both of which are Win10, Latest version of Maya 2018 and latest Vray, dual proc Xeons, one has 64GB RAM the other 128GB RAM. These problems never occurred prior to Maya 2018 so I doubt it's hardware related.

During render, my RAM is not getting maxed out so it's not that. Also, setting the Affinity in Windows to reserve a few CPUs prevents the computer from being locked up, but the render itself will still lock up and jump ahead as described above.

What happens if you turn on the "Low thread priority" option in the System tab?

I just tried that, and it doesn't seem to help. Disabling a handful of cores via the Affinity settings is the only thing I've found so far that helps.

Ok, thanks. I think we will have some solution for this soon.

similar behaving on mac osx.. everything comes to a crawl.
Maya taking up lots of CPU when cpu rendering is actually off in the vray settings.
Mac pro using 1 ATI Radian HD 5000 hooked to monitor and 2 GTX 980 TI Nvidia cards not hooked up.

I don't know if this is related directly, but we have experienced freezes when commandline rendering (Render.exe -r vray) as well. However, unlike this report, the machine is never "released", causing the machine to freeze indefinitely. Or until you kill the process manually.

Lately, I've only seen this issue being hit when V-Ray has finished writing the render to disk and immediately after the render log says something about "clearing memory..." (among the very last log messages, if not the last?).

Edit: I might add that in our case, the freeze is not reproducible but is hit a couple of times a day due to the high volume of render jobs on our render farm.

I realize I should add more data about version of V-Ray/Maya/platform etc. I can add this here on Monday.

It would be helpful if you can provide the full log.
