  • V-Ray OpenPBR Shader

Hi, I've been working/testing with Arnolds OpenPBR shader with great results. When can we expect a V-Ray OpenPBR shader to drop. I'd like to start using it in our productions ASAP. Thanks.

EDIT: We are working on it.

We also want to jump onto the openPBR shader.
We would like to use the materialX openPBR in LookDevX. And if im not mistaken Chaos is working on supporting that shader.
We want to build render independent shaders.

Same here. We need something that can travel across many different global workflows with consistent results.

I would even expand this to materialX Lama and the upcoming Disney_Principled shaders.
          Just all materialX nodes.

Me too, sharing scenes with the team sometimes is difficult.

Here we go. That is the shader we like to use in the future.

In the beta of V-Ray 7 for Maya, the VRayMtl material has an option for OpenPBR compatibility. We already have initial support for the new OpenPBR material in 3ds Max as well. We will also support OpenPBR as part of MaterialX.

                Best regards,
                Vlado

Thanks Vlado. Just testing this now. Rendering Maya's 'openPBRSurface' I appear to have an issue with Subsurface - The Radius and Radius Scale parameters. Radius set to 1(cm?), Radius scale only works well at 0.0001-0.005 is this Centimetres? Is this value mapping incorrectly? Arnold looks very different when using SSS. Here are two renders from the same scene, same shader, sss set to Radius - 1 Radius Scale White (0,0,1)

It looks like Radius is having little to no effect.

VRay material SSS matches Arnold OpenPBR SSS very well. See attached. Same radius scale and colour. VRay OpenPBR SSS implementation must be the culprit. Can you check and fix?

The native Maya Open PBR Material's support is still WIP. The particular SSS differences is already logged (internal bug-tracker id: VMAYA-13216). For other reports, regarding the V-Ray 7 for Maya beta, you can post in the designated forum sections here.

Hi, I'm trying to use MaterialX OpenPBR in Maya with VRay render engine. Mostly works ok, but Normal maps seem broken (colour is OK). Here is the render result switching between Arnold and VRay in the same scene. Can you check bump/normal mapping is working as expected. Thanks.

Looks like a color3 vs vector3 interpretation issue. colour3 and vector3 works for Arnold, only vector3 works for VRay. I assume renderer is expecting a vector for normal mapping. Here they're both set to vector3. Results are similar, but different. VRay is softer/lower res?

I assume that, too. I've logged the issue (internal bug-tracker id: VMAYA-13379) for the devs to say.
