  • MAYA render layer with individual sets of render elements

the title says it all, even though the render elements in vray are very good, we still end up with creating different scenes for special demands by the comp department...

like hiding or matte out objects etc.

thanks god maya has render layer, that can handle most of the stuff.
but the problem is that we want to be able to set different renderelements
per render layer. otherwise we render out the full set of 10+ elements for
every single render pass, even though we might only want to use one element out of it.

thats a waste of storage, and also a waste of saving time (saving big exr becomes an issues when you saving thousands of frames...)

mental ray supports that in maya, is something like that available or planned for vray?

    thanks, hannes

this is already possible even without the custom scripts. Each of the render elements has an "enable" function which is supported by render layers. Enabling specific render elements with render layer override allows you to do what you need and only render specific elements for specific layers. You can go even further then this, for example creating a controller node which is linked to the render elements "enable" channel and then controlling just that one node with render layer overrides which in turn controls the render elements.
