Unfortunately we don't have educational versions of the nightly builds :-/ But I think it should work with any 2.x version...
Best regards,
Vlado
I imagined so, but as you said would that would work with any 2.x version.... as my license uses the vray core 2.0 i guess I should be fine anyway or at least I hope so i cant wait to get the fume rendered in vray. Hope you would let me try the version

Would the FumeFX volumes render with the PhoenixFD shader, which is super fast, or with their shader? If it is with their shader is it possible to render their Field3D exports within Maya using VRay3.0 and the new VRayVolumeGrid shader in Maya with the PhoenixFD implementation?

By default it will be their shader.

For sure it is possible; it's one of the reasons we added the VRayVolumeGrid shader and Field3D support
So I am using the VolumeGrid and I am not getting the speed (10x slower) I usually get with Maya Fluids using the VRay Fluid Shading Quality attributes with the PhoenixFD Volume shader enabled. Does the VolumeGrid use the PhoenixFD shader automatically or is there somewhere where that needs to be enabled? Also lights are not working as expected, I need a much higher intensity for them to show up on the volume.
I am trying to render a VDB file. A frame is 150mb, the whole sequence is about 6.23GB.
I am currently learning volumetrics so I may be doing something horribly wrong here.

Set up ur spacing "?" I think spacing. Anyway set it up to 100 from 1. And then it should render in seconds... Also VolumeGrid is pretty much phoenix. Get ur settings right and it will be way faster than mayas native shader.
As to light I think u need to multiply them by 4 in shader...

The Maya Fluids I was rendering were using the PhoenixFD shader. By spacing do you mean the "ReduceGrid" and "Grid-based" attribute % set to 1-10%? Where do I multiply the light in the VolumeGrid?
Thank you for your help by the way, it is really appreciated.
That is using the "VRay Fluid Shading Quality" attribute though, isn't it? I am using the new VRayVolumeGrid for VRay 3.0 container that allows you to import OpenVDB and Field3D files. I cannot find that attribute in the VRayVolumeGrid at all.
I cant manage to get render times even close to what I get with MayaFluids + PhoenixFD VRay attribute. It is usually north of a 15-30 minute render on a 4930k (10 threads) using Vray3.0 beta 2 at 1280*720.
I just installed the latest vray 3.0 beta and loaded a default .f3d sim into the VRayVolumeGrid.
I must be doing something wrong because I get a // Warning: [PhoenixSimPlugin] Error loading simulation data for time 1! and the render stays back.
I played with the %d formating but still no luck.
My sim is called okay_0001.f3d and goes to okay_0048.f3d.
So I tried okay_%04d.f3d and also okay_%04d ... no luck.
Also it loads the correct grid size if I just load a frame via double click ... but also no FIRE.
The Cache Info states Smoke;Fuel;
The Cache Range stays blank.
