  • Car Paint render passes

    Hi,

I've recently switched from Mental Ray to Vray and the majority of my work is automotive. I was using 3rd party Paint Shaders such as Spheron which produce very simple render elements. Basically you get what they would call a reflection pass and a diffuse pass and that was it. The reflection pass itself came out as just the clearcoat and the diffuse would be the real diffuse (lighting) plus the metallic reflection component.

This is different with Vray, the diffuse pass is literally that, just the lighting, and the reflection is the base reflection (metallic) plus the clearcoat. I have a workaround at the moment where I use a blend shader and add the base to a separate clearcoat and use material selects to seperate them into usable passes. This is quite cumbersome and takes time and a bit of explaining when passing on to retouchers.

It would be great if there was a way of redirecting the base-reflection element into the diffuse channel, it would simplify my rendering and retouching workflow greatly.

it almost sounds like you are requesting two new elements, vrayCarPaintBase and vrayCarPaintCoat.

For now what you made as a workaround is as good as I would suggest for a solution. But perhaps folks at ChaosGroup would consider this request!

I would just ask for metallic pass to be separate.

      1 Lighting
      1 Secular
      1 Clear coat
      1 Metalic

        Thanks for the replies,

I think just being able to remove the metallic reflection from the reflection pass would make it usable. As D said, maybe it's easier to produce a totally different channel. It just means that there will be an increase in the number of passes in the comp file which I'm also trying to avoid.
