Hello,
I would like to see an addition to the vraymesh format, to also have a vrayStandin object. Almost like the aiStandin for Arnold. It's quite a pain at the moment when you have characters that has displacements and you can't export them as a vraymesh to be used in shots. Since a vraymesh only supports a single displacement, and was from the beginning to designed as a asset format. So a container, much like how Alembic works but support for shaders/SG nodes.
In general it's a bit difficult at the moment to be render efficient with large datasets that we are trying to be smart with. There might be something that we are missing but I would like to see some more workflows that is generated from working with lots of caches and not actual geometry. Perhaps the the "new" insight to the katana workflow will help. But we would like to have that workflow also within Maya, to be able to use cached formats.
Ideally the lighters only tweak lights and don't touch the lookDev models. But then we would need something that resembles a RIB or aiStandin. So maybe a "VIB" (Vray Interface Bytestream)
best regards
