  • Shadow catcher and render passes

    Hello, everyone.

Could you please tell me, can I use Modo shader (with option Shadow Catcher) as VRay shadow catcher? Is VRay have it's own shadow catcher option in material for example or else?
I'd like to separate object and render it on black, to compose after. In modo to do this I'm using groups with tag materials or selection sets, and place render outputs in this group. Did VRay have same options? I've tryed to do this, but have no result. VRay rendering all geometry with no separation to groups.

Is it correct that modo render passes supports by vray renderer?

    Hi,

About the first question, yes, you can use the "Shadow catcher" option with V-Ray. Alternatively you can use the "V-Ray Object Properties" tab
for the Shader, if you are familiar with the VRayMtlWrapper from other versions of V-Ray.

About the second question, masking the render outputs is not implemented currently in V-Ray for modo. We will be looking into it though.

You can see a list of the supported render outputs here : https://www.dropbox.com/s/j9jslp9n1c...ments.txt?dl=0
The supported one have an 'x' in the checkbox before them.

      This is vray shadow catcher:

As for me, vray shadow catcher working much better and did a very good job. But standart modo shadow catcher good for gets transparent shadows. Both are is great!

For the V-Ray shadow catcher, did you use the V-Ray object properties ? If you did, you can make the shadows visible in the alpha channel by setting the "Alpha contribution" to -1.

What format did you save the V-Ray render output in ?

The modo result should be achievable with V-Ray.

This is only when you disable GI. With Gi is on the result is different

The V-Ray object properties are added to "Shader" items. But right now it only works for "Shader" items in the shader tree (doesn't work for "Shader" items connected to a mesh directly).
