The plan is to release the build with the new licensing on or shortly after 2015.12.08 . Hopefully there are no problems and it is not even later than that.

is it possible to use level of detail on proxy objects? Basically if a model gets farther away from the camera, the polycount is reduced or the model is swapped against a several lowres versions after a user defined distance.

There is something like this implemented currently, but I think you have to use the ply2vrmesh tool directly (I didn't add those options to the MODO UI for ply2vrmesh) to generate a suitable .vrmesh file.
The V-Ray for Maya guys are doing some research for what you are requesting, as the current method/implementation doesn't seem to work that great in practice.
If I don't forget I will write back here when there is progress on the improvements.
