  • settings in modo influence vray

    Hi Vladimir

I really like that vray is so deeply integrated into modo but it is also confusing me a little too. Please can you explain a few basics to me?

I always ignored the render settings tab when I used vray as a renderer. Just now I tried sorting out some reflection/ refraction issues and realized the raytracing panel does influence the vray renderer.
I changed the reflection depth and refraction depth and it solved my issues. but then under the same tab is a maximum radiance value...and under vray main there is it's own max ray intensity.
Am I supposed to use the modo settings and also the vray settings? I would have expected them to be together for vray.
What I am trying to find out....how would I and any other new user know when to use settings under modo settings or not.

PS. I kept changing the reflection/ refraction values on the materials but it had no difference, so I changed the globals and it worked

From the Render -> Settings tab, the only channels used are "Reflection Depth" and "Refraction Depth". These are used only with MODO's own material, since it doesn't have its own options for these like the V-Ray material.

From the Render -> Global Illumination tab only the "Ambient Intensity" and "Ambient Color" are used.

I guess we should add this information to the help.

    Which reflection/refraction values ?

      ok, this makes sense now.
I am looking at a mirror (modo material) and having problems with a glass reflecting in the mirror(Vray material). So I kept changing the vray material but actually it was the mirror/reflection from modo.

I now understand, thanks! If using modo material the settings is in modo, vray materials will override the reflection/ refraction values..

      Thanks!

Note that both the V-Ray and MODO materials are affected by the Render -> V-Ray Main -> "Use global max depth" / "Global max depth" options.
