Is there any way to improve the vray proxies in modo? It is extremely difficult to select them in the viewport. It is actually so difficult I would not use them again

I second that - it is a real pain to use proxies. Some times it is almost imposible to select ones. It doesn't stop me from using them but they definitely need some love

So, there are two separate issues here:

      1. If the proxy was created from a non-subd mesh, its preview will be a bunch of disconnected triangles. Trying to select them using click selection can be a pain, since there is a lot of empty space between them. See attached screenshot.
Using paint selection works relatively ok in this case. Just paint across the proxy until it gets selected (i.e. you hit a polygon). Also you can switch the preview type to bounding box or voxel bounding boxes.
I will add the mesh simplification options for creating the vrmesh preview (in the Convert to V-Ray Proxy command). They create a connected mesh, which should work much better with click selection.

      2. Lasso selection doesn't work correctly on the V-Ray Proxy.
This seems like a MODO bug to me, affecting all custom geometry (i.e. everything that is not a standard editable MODO mesh).
In the attached screenshot, I have highlighted in red, the areas which when covered by the lasso region, will cause the corresponding item to get selected.

It seems only the center of procedural geometry will trigger a selection, as well as any tool handles that it has (see the gear item).

I will start a thread on the MODO SDK forum about this issue as well.

You can test it for yourself with MODO's deferred mesh for example, and report it as a bug to The Foundry.

I am not using proxies a lot so have very little experience with them. Currently I am doing a scene where I copy a lot of proxies around in the scene.
I find it very slow. Is this normal/ right behavior?
When I select them modo will "freeze" for quite a while, then again when I copy modo do "freeze" again for quite a long time before I can move them where they should be.
Almost feel like modo is regenerating all the proxies before I can continue.
Once the copy is made they are really fast moving around etc. Is this right?

Can you send me the scene for this so I can investigate what is going on ?

              thanks

You can select a bunch of V-Ray Proxy items and changing the .vrmesh file will change it on all of them.

Or do you mean selecting multiple .vrmesh files, which should create a separate V-Ray Proxy for each.
Like many parts of one object split into several .vrmesh files ?

                  Hi Vladimir,

yep, its like having 30 individual highres objects (f.e. people) each inside a separate proxy and I want to bring them in the main scene in one go.
(Usually I have a separate scene where I gather trees, cars, people ect. shade them and export these objects later as a proxys. The Materials get grouped and referenced into the target scene. Its ideal, since your scene is much lighter thanks to the proxys)

                  Greetings

We could add a Import V-Ray Proxy command or something similarly named, that can create multiple V-Ray Proxy items from multiple selected .vrmesh files,
but they will all be at the same position when you import them, so you still have to move them around ?
