I feel that texturing procedurally is considerably disadvantaged in V-Ray for Modo compared to other applications. This is of course mainly due to failings in the host application.
Modo is generally bad for previewing anything that doesn't relate directly to the final image, passes etc. There's no general purpose material ball that 3rd party renderers can hook into. There's no 2d texture previews, procedural or otherwise, in the shading nodes. There's no 2d view of procedurals for easy tweaking.
For modo texturing you can set a small preview window for the internal renderer to plane, cube or sphere while working on a material, but it still doesn't handle individual layers effectively and is of course completely useless for 3rd party renderers.
Working with V-Ray procedural texturing is frustrating due the lack of material previewing that doesn't take place in the full scene. Especially lack of a quick way to tweak procedurals once they're assigned to shading effects and not simply a black/white diffuse color on the top layer.
Is it at all technically possible to add a 2d "image viewer" for V-Ray procedurals to V-Ray for Modo that simply shows the current procedural being worked on regardless of what shading function it's being assigned to?
Something like the attached image from 3ds max.
I've made a feature request for modo through the appropriate channels, but who knows if or when something useful comes out of that.
