  • Previewing procedural texturing

I feel that texturing procedurally is considerably disadvantaged in V-Ray for Modo compared to other applications. This is of course mainly due to failings in the host application.
Modo is generally bad for previewing anything that doesn't relate directly to the final image, passes etc. There's no general purpose material ball that 3rd party renderers can hook into. There's no 2d texture previews, procedural or otherwise, in the shading nodes. There's no 2d view of procedurals for easy tweaking.

For modo texturing you can set a small preview window for the internal renderer to plane, cube or sphere while working on a material, but it still doesn't handle individual layers effectively and is of course completely useless for 3rd party renderers.

Working with V-Ray procedural texturing is frustrating due the lack of material previewing that doesn't take place in the full scene. Especially lack of a quick way to tweak procedurals once they're assigned to shading effects and not simply a black/white diffuse color on the top layer.

Is it at all technically possible to add a 2d "image viewer" for V-Ray procedurals to V-Ray for Modo that simply shows the current procedural being worked on regardless of what shading function it's being assigned to?

Something like the attached image from 3ds max.

I've made a feature request for modo through the appropriate channels, but who knows if or when something useful comes out of that.

We were discussing something like this here : http://forums.chaosgroup.com/showthr...694#post669694

Initially, I think it will be easier to implement a special mode for RT rendering where it shows you the currently selected texture (or the blending of all textures with its effect) applied to a light material, instead of the actual material.

Anything to help with better previewing V-Ray/Bercon procedurals as they're layered up will be an immense help.

In the last nightly ( 2017.04.25 ), I've added the ability to "isolate" the selected texture, its effect or its effect taking into account only the texture and those below it in the Shader Tree.
This works only in the Shader Tree for now, i.e. the selected texture needs to be in the Shader Tree.

A couple of short clips showing this:

Maybe it could be possible to have seperate window that shows the current effect when selecting a node in shadertree or schematic. Its really hard to do schematic shading without.

Do you mean like the Max/Maya/Cinema4D/Lightwave material/texture swatches ? A plane with the texture or a ball with the material ?
I will hopefully get to that.

This would be really nice to have
There is this preview for materials and textures in schematic. If this worked with Vray,it will be huge workflow improvement.

Or maybe a separate floating window like Modo preview window or the materials swatch in the new Vray for sketchup/Rhino

I don't know if this is possible to make in Modo or not,but would be nice to have.
