  • V-Ray for MODO/LINUX

Just a question: Is there a Linux version for V-Ray for MODO planned?

We are not sure what the demands would be yet. Let's see how V-Ray for Modo fares as a product first.

Just out of curiosity: Does V-Ray core (any package) work on Linux already?

Yes, obviously, since we already have V-Ray for Maya on Linux, as well as V-Ray for Katana, V-Ray for Blender and V-Ray Standalone

        Best regards,

I have only recently joined the V-Ray family (and loving it) - sorry for the noob'ish questions. Was not aware of that.

I fear it's a rather small market since LINUX as OS is already a niche product except for larger studios. Also MODO on LINUX is for sure not TF's bestseller.
Was just curious, because the option to have at least my renderslaves running LINUX with V-Ray for MODO as standalone-version on them would be great.

You can do that even now though? You just need V-Ray Standalone for Linux. You already have the render licenses for it. If you don't have access to the standalone installations let me know and we can arrange that.

Does that work? Because the "normal" standalone version for windows didn't work with V-Ray for MODO...I had to install the V-Ray for MODO version as standalone on all my slaves

Yes, it's safer to use the standalone from V-Ray for MODO.
So, this is a good case for creating a V-Ray for MODO for Linux, so you have a matching version of the Windows/Mac builds, which you could use on render slaves to save on some expenses for buying an OS.
I have it logged to make a Linux version, but can't promise when I will get there.

I have to say, i really love the chaosgroup-team. You consider even the most exotic suggestions from the community to improve your products.
When the Affinity-Serif team was asked about a possible linux-version of their 2D pixel/vector programs, their only answer was "if you give us the $ 500.000,- this port would "cost" us, we'll consider it"

I have already tried it ( on a Fedora distro ) and it worked, but it's not fully fonctionnal. Progressive in DR mode makes Modo crash on the main computer, and some Modo specific features ( like the Variation Texture ) aren't supported since it's in recent builds which don't run on Linux.

I had similar problems when using the windows-versions, therefore i installed the V-Ray for MODO standalone version instead of the "normal" standalone version. I have also V-Ray for MAYA running on my slaves and ended up having two different standalone versions running on different ports now. One for MAYA and one for MODO. Works really great, so no problems with that setup though, but I'm forced to have my slaves on windows to serve MODO and MAYA
