    Ok!

    Thanks Vladimir, that worked!!
Here's the two renders, I think the overall displacement looks right comparing to the modo render. I set the v-ray material properties to 1m (or ~3'3").
(although the modo in progress render looks like crap compared to the v-ray one).

I noticed under the tooltip it mentions 'use_globals' makes this a multiplier, is that the option in the UI Group below called 'Use global settings' ?

    Finally,
If I want to take advantage of the other more advanced v-ray material types, I should use v-ray material shaders in between right?

    thx!

So if it's a multiplier, why does need to be a length unit?
It was a mistake to make it a multiplier, I think. You are correct, it doesn't make sense to have it in meters. Still not sure how to fix it properly.

(although the modo in progress render looks like crap compared to the v-ray one).
MODO's preview has a draft displacements option, which is enabled by default. If you turn it off, it might render better.

Under the V-Ray RT, Performance tab, under Global Displacement Options there is an Amount option, which is a multiplier for all displacement in the scene.
Not sure when that can be useful.

If I want to take advantage of the other more advanced v-ray material types, I should use v-ray material shaders in between right?
Yes, above the substance material and below the textures. But I am not sure the textures that substance generates can be meaningfully used on those other shaders.
