  • Nested Replicators do not render

A replicator that uses another replicator as the Prototype will not render in V-ray.

  • #2
Yes, this doesn't work currently. We have code in the V-Ray core that does this ( I think it was used for the our Softimage ICE implementation).
I need to check if it will be possible to use it in V-Ray for MODO.

There is another problem with replicators. If you drag a replicator to the schematic and connect multiple prototypes, vray only renders 1 of the prototypes.

This is now fixed for the next build (3.00.03). There are a couple of problems with shading such Replicators in V-Ray, that you may run into.

The first problem is that V-Ray will not use a shader tree group mask when it is set to a Replicator item. The mask will be ignored.

The second problem is that if you are using a Variation texture for a Replicator that uses another Replicator as prototype, the variation will
be based on the particles IDs of the nested Replicator only. Basically each copy of the nested Replicator will have the same colors applied.

Let me know if you need these features for achieving a certain effect, and I will see what I can do. They will be harder to fix as internally
        V-Ray doesn't have a "shader tree" concept.

Thank you for pointing it out. It was a very easy fix, but I had no idea that you can connect the prototypes in the Schematic and that you can have more than one connected.
