  • Layered materials combine strangely

Been trying to make a multi-layered material, with a wide and sharp specular. Trouble is that even at .1%, the top layer kills any below it.

See pic for details. I'm using the 'Texture layers' panel to control the blend mode/opacity of the layers - is this the right way to make multi-layered mats?

    Cheers - Chris

This way of blending materials can be useful in some situations, but is not equivalent to the V-Ray Blend material from other integrations of V-Ray.
When you blend two materials like that :
    1. they need to be the same type
    2. what gets blended is the channels that can have textures specified - basically everything you find in the context menu when setting a texture's effect
    3. channels that cannot be textured (for example subdivs, BRDF type) are taken from the topmost material
    4. the reflections (diffuse, specular, etc.) when shading with the material are computed only once using the blended textures.

You can read this thread for the current way to make actual blend materials in V-Ray for MODO : http://forums.chaosgroup.com/showthr...Material/page2

More specifically this post from me : http://forums.chaosgroup.com/showthr...782#post630782

Basically we follow the MODO way to do that. Eventually I will add a separate Blend and 2Sided materials, that will work
with nodal shading (you will have to make the connections in the Schematic).
