  • Weird stuff rendered when using clipping plane

    Hi,
I use clipping plane to see a section of my model, but in the render appears something that is not in the model (as you can see in the printscreen). Anyone has experience with this kind of a problem?
    Thanks for any advice!

    Hello Val the Sinarb

I would like to make a suggestion regarding what could be causing this to happen. The following two notes were taken from the Clipper tool section of the documentation and I believe that one of them could explain this behavior:
    - V-Ray Clipper works best with "closed" objects. The results on open objects (without a corresponding back face) are not well defined.
    - Currently, the V-Ray Clipper may produce artifacts if there are overlapping triangles in the scene, regardless of whether they are part of the same object or not.

Please check your project if one of the above mentioned points applies to it or let me know if you need any additional help.

I run in this problem often too and I miss to disable the automatic generated fill planes which cause the artifacts. Rhino is a surface modeler and it's not easy to start a remodeling for closed objects for rendering only. Often my clients send me complex models and it's difficult to find the problematic objects and to make this solid. The Rhino clipping plane doesn't create fill planes and most this kind of basic clipping looks quite good. Please talk with the core team to add an option to disable this fill planes. It could be great, if the fill planes could be enabled for selected objects per object properties if needed. It's a nice feature, but not useful all time.

Sidenote: I found that it doesn't help to set an invisible material as fill material, the artifacts are still visible often.

        Hello Micha

I would like to highlight the Clipping plane's property to disable the "Use Object Material" switch and to leave the "Material" to None. I believe that this could be useful for your needs.
Let me know if these settings produce a satisfying result it combination with your workflow.

If intersecting fill planes cause artifacts than it doesn't help to set a the material to "none" or to use an invisible material. The artifact error makes them visible. It's a hard problem for Rhino models.

And here the nice clean look of Rhino clipping plane view without automatic generated fill planes. It could be great to be able to enable this basic look.
